This feels like a natural progression from Dark Bird to me. Songs like “The Running Styles of New York” would have fit nicely on that one, but the lyrics have improved a good deal. Idk maybe it’s just me but this feels like the album Dark Bird wanted to be, haha. It does incorporate a lot of what made his earlier albums work so well, but I don’t think if just completely abandons the direction of Dark Bird either.

I wish I heard what you hear bud, but to me Running Styles is the only slightly Dark Bird-ish song, the rest falls hard back into old patterns.

This could have came out after Shallow Grave. That doesn't cut it in 2019.

"There were comparisons to Bob Dylan aplenty, which most people considered to be a strength while others lamented it as a cheap derivation."
Not your strongest sentence Sowing, could use some tidying up.

I agree it's a bit clunky, but I'm not sure what's wrong with it in terms of grammar/syntax unless I'm just being daft. Been fairly sleep deprived so maybe I'm just missing it.

I do find most of this (and Hotel Bar in particular) very pretty
Just wish it impressed me
Most of this is like listening to Wild Hunt b-sides, which is probably still 3-worthy but I was feeling particularly critical

Atari I'm looking forward to your counterpoint review because I want to like this more, and I'm hoping someone can write about this in a way that helps me see what's so special about it

Don’t quote me on that just yet, haha
Not sure I could sway you anyways, considering I don’t think this sounds like Wild Hunt b-sides ;) I’m a Stranger Now does kinda remind me of a more restrained King of Spain tho. For me it’s like a mixture of everything he’s done with some slight adjustments. Completely understandable that some aren’t as impressed with it or find it derivative. I guess I just don’t care if it’s breaking much new ground when the songwriting is this good.

i'm a stranger now is the only song that draws me back

"This could have came out after Shallow Grave" just makes me hyped to hear this tbh, though I'll certainly admit that that style of folk is my musical comfort food, hard for me to get bored of it. That being said, not heard this yet, I may end up echoing your views

@dim m/
TTMOE has that rare thing. his music makes me sad and happy at the same time. it makes me miss old friends and old loves but it also makes me want to live the life of a drifter and forever be a stranger, never being attached to anything, always onto the next adventure.
