"Dev fans, myself included (although I try to avoid going to much into this), do tend to have a “he can do no wrong” complex. "
I see myself as a Devy fan, but for me his music is really hit or miss. I didn't really like Transcendence, Sky Blue and Z2 all that much so I don't have that complex haha. This hits closer to Deconstruction for me.
@parksungjoon: "Simply isn't good" is in the eye of the beholder I guess, and I beg to differ. He often uses intricate song structures, complex arrangements and strong melodies that I find really enjoyable. It's often in a silly context, yet this is way less so. I find songs like 'The Mighty Masturbator' and 'Singularity' absolutely fantastic songs.

And hell yeah it's pretentious. To me, that doesn't make it any less enjoyable though.

Pretentious, adjective: attempting to impress by affecting greater importance, talent, culture, etc., than is actually possessed.
Umm, I'm pretty sure that y'all (even Devy) need a different word than pretentious. Flamboyant and extravagant, maybe? Perhaps even bombastic and overblown, if you're not a fan? I mean, his constant self-deprecation and the fact that he wrote a rock opera about an alien looking for a cup of coffee alone should negate charges of pretentiousness.

@scheumke
his intricate song structures and complex arrangements were way better on ocean machine and terria vs on deconstruction and later tbh
|

@sitar
i think he's a cool guy for sure, especially watching some of his guitar clinics, but some of his music definitely attracts THAT type of prog metal pseudointellectual... the kind who thinks blackwater park is the best album of all time

Ghost Reveries*
Prog metal is just generally rife with pseudointellectuals. I know as many prog snobs who dislike Devy because of his less than serious attitude as I do who love him, and honestly the Devy devotees are more fun people. Just last week I fired my bass player because he said Devy was a Rob Halford ripoff.
I mean, I didn't fire him because he doesn't like Devy. I fired him because he's clearly hard of hearing and has no business being in a band, even as a bass player. xD

"and honestly the Devy devotees are more fun people"
fanboys are only fun until they hear a differing opinion lol

scheumke the thing is just because something is complex or layered or intricate doesnt mean its inherently good
i mean dream theater havent put out a good album since like six degrees
and then theres modern tech death
and all the meshuggah ripoffs that couldnt write a coherent song to save their lives
