Bandcamp my friend. I spend a fair amount of time browsing through there. It's a great source for underground bands, though you have to be aware that a lot of mediocre/poor content is abound as well.

Whenever I use bandcamp, I have something specific in mind. I haven't tried to just search and see what I come up with yet. It didn't look like the interface was all that great when it came to just browsing the site for random stuff, but I could be wrong.

It's probably not the best. What I generally do is scroll down on the home page to 'browse all tags' and start selecting things I like or might otherwise interest me. It will show the best-selling/hot albums in that genre or ypycan sort by new (but that's a higher gamble)
