"If you want something that stands out a bit more I would recommend Alcest's 'Kodama' and Cult of Luna's 'Mariner' (more post-metal, dunno if that counts but it's great either way)."

Cult of Luna is more my type of post...still to check Mariner properly though...I'm talking more of these "positive deafheavenesque postblack" kinda thing, that its getting me confused...I really like Alcest's Écailles de lune though.

PS: Kodama was already on my today's list, so you're kinda late but on the same page here. TKS for reinforcing it lol

This one really resonated with me on first listen. Doesn't break any ground but new music doesn't always have too to be captivating and emotionally engaging.

Really digging the subtle horns here and there and the synths on the climax of Sorrow were really well done

my post-rock rec's would be Russian Circles - Enter and Pelican - The Fire in our throats.... and Kauan - Kaiho. I feel they mostly step out of the post rock tropes of clean trems with max reverb and typical peaks and valley songwriting (don't get me wrong cause when done right it can be downright glorious and breathtaking)

As far as post metal goes, if you haven't jammed the classics like Neurosis or Isis, your in for a treat

There is something very charming about the sloppy singing in Breathe.

idgaf what anyone says, Sorrow is one of the best songs of 2019. The chorus melody alone is stunning.

The first I’ve listened to since the one after hymn and I dig. It has all the necessary post-rock swish.

Very new to this band. Just trying to check out a few more post rock bands and I really enjoyed this. Not a popular opinion but I was really bored by Hymn, just found it all Unnecessarily over the top, with awkward, jarring and uninspiring crescendos which didn’t feel natural. And just too much on the orchestra/strings, found it all so fatiguing. Having said that I did like The Battle to Heaven. Best track.

So far Nowhere Now Here and One Step More are my favourite.

The songs here feel more grounded and heavier, and more direct.

Couldn't agree more mate, I find Hymn borderline unlistenable and just void of any substance whatsoever, completely soulless 'art' for art's sake to the point that it almost makes me angry. This is much more varied and interesting to me and I actively enjoy meet us where the night ends.

Dudes, Hymn is a fucking postrock classic. I can understand finding it overwhelming, but not soulless. These guitarists wrench more emotion out of their instrumentals than anyone else I can think of.

I listened to this loads earlier this year because I was set to see these guys, but haven't checked it since the show. Pretty meh by their standards but yeah, Meet Me Where the Night Ends is cool.

Inferno, For sure it is widely accepted as a post rock classic no doubt but there’s just something about it which fails to engage me. It’s exactly the same situation with Sigur Ros. () or Takk do nothing for me, but I really enjoy Kveikur. So with both bands it seems I am in the minority by favouring their latest album and not enjoying their established classics. That’s music for you! This is darker, heavier, Where the quiet sections have more structure and momentum, with more controlled peaks and crescendos. I just find it far more moving overall.

More generic peaks and crescendos, maybe. I do like what they've presented here, but the songs on their older stuff takes you around the world and back whereas this is pretty standard postrock.

"Darker"

maybe

"heavier"

No way. The songs build to completely overwhelming heights on albums like Hymn in ways that they just don't here.

I understand having different tastes btw, I'm not the kind of person who'd say that you're wrong for liking what you like. My comment was more directed at Ben really.

I went back and gave it another go. Headphones on and locked in. But same outcome. If I had a VU meter attached to my heart then while listening to Hymn the needle would hardly flutter. And having given this much thought it’s because the palette of sound for each song on Hymn is the same and it’s very limited in scope. The crescendos also sound all so very similar that I get the feeling I’m just repeating the same song just told very slightly differently. But with Nowhere Now Here I really believe that the palette is more diverse, they try different ways to create their peaks and finales - and it just genuinely really moves me - that VU Meter is up and down all the time. So while I fully appreciate the swells of majesty and quiet ambience of Hymn it’s just the way in which it’s done just doesn’t connect with me. By comparison I play Sorrow or After You Comes the Flood and I’m literally blown away.
