Most people haven't...
I've got a dilemma... despite the fact some of this actively irritating, that I don't enjoy the vocal style or the awful synthetic-sounding vocal effects, that the lyrics are bordering on offensive to anyone who isn't either 15 (or severely lacking in awareness)... in addition we have major publications claiming this is the OKC of the current generation & a front-man who's so shockingly arrogant & unaware of himself that he comes across as a giant douche...
I still can't likely give this a 1/5, we'll see.
P.S This is an awful mess of a comment reading it back, ah well.

withstood about 80 seconds of tootime, felt very little urge to listen to any of their other work

i dunno dude, for what i've seen, the general consensus is like "the 1975 finally come out with something decent! really, for realisies!"
nah dude, fuck this shit.

>if you want a good The 1975 album in 2018, might I recommend Pale Waves,
No, don't do that. I tend to have a bias in favor of female vocalists, but while I mostly liked their EP, I found that her voice annoyed the hell out of me after just a few songs on the LP. It has a very unpleasant whiny quality to it.

Great comment granite. I referred specifically to women because I remember reading something somewhere about people perceiving Healy as not straight instead of him actually being not straight (which I may have glommed on to because that is a Personal Lived Experience and a half) but I also may have misread/misremembered it.
And yeah the PW lead singer has a somewhat rough voice but nevertheless it's my second favorite album of the year

you can be not straight and still toxic, remember kevin spacey

Someone in my theater company referred to this as "the best album that anyone has ever released."

Good review. As much as I like to think he's very self-aware about his lyrics being pretentious, stuff like the "context in a modern debate" line make me question that. Also: "The song characterizes the state we’re in today with the care and sensitivity of a rockist characterizing a Janelle Monae album" 10/10

I had never even heard of these guys, then I had the displeasure of hearing love it if we made it. The vocalist is definitely a clown, the last thing I want to spend my time doing is listening to social media quality political opinions delivered through the lens of pop music.

Really enjoy this review, although I think the biggest problem with the album isn't even Healy's lyrics but how. damn. BORING it is. Ballad after ballad after ballad. At least the debut was fun.
That context in a modern debate is the worst lyrics for sure.
I really enjoyed "Love it if we Made It" basically because everything you describe as a weakness is a strength in my eyes. It's totally vapid, surface level, etc. but I think it's also very effective as an encapsulation of the news onslaught social media feed thing. Also I think his vocal delivery is quite good, especially the "I moved on her like a BITCH" part.

I don’t enjoy how The 1975 don’t make me feel like banging my head like, at all with this record

I've only heard "Give Yourself a Try," but the fucking guitar tone in that song is a war crime. Goddamn, who approved of that abomination?
