They were trying to create an album that sounded like a few kids jamming in a garage and bring it back to basics since they couldn't expand their sound anymore. Obviously it failed but I'm sure if another lesser known band released this it wouldn't be as universally panned.
The album has some decent tunes, and it would be interesting to hear what it would be like if it was re-recorded and the songs lengths were trimmed, maybe add a few solos, change Lars trash cans for a drum kit.
We would be looking at a 2.5/3 rating.

I hear this argument a lot and I definitely agree, but I also think knowing a massively successful band recorded this makes it legitimately, substantially worse. They had time and resources most bands only ever dream of having, and not only did they fail to make a good album, they failed to even make a competent one.

Meh. Not a good album but not terrible imho. Love Frantic and St Anger. The rest ranges from bad to mediocre.

This is unlistenable for the most part. Anything above 2 does not make sense to me lul

And I thought Rick Rubin was a bad producer for using loudness war in his production, but then comes Bob Rock with this album and he compress the shit out of the instruments to the point that it sounds like it was recorded with a very cheap amp.
