Darkness is probably my favorite so far. The “I know it’s been a long time coming” section hits so hard. So far I’m in love, though it’s not as good as Cardinal.

Audiotree Live, Elsewhere, and Tiny Desk Sessions are really where the Cardinal songs come to life. Watching/listening to those is really what drew me into the band after Cardinal didn't make an initial impression on me after a couple listens. Now they're one of my favorite active bands.
Anyway. I love this. The shorter songs (other than Angelina) are still growing on me, along with Light On. Favorites are probably Portal, Easy Enough, Darkness, and the title track.

Huh, was expecting country. Unfortunately no songs about partying or drinkin that whisky and drivin trucks N' muddin

lol this has some country inflections but it's not really country

After a couple of spins, my initial opinion is that this is better as an album but has less strong of peaks for me I guess. Less lows but also less stands out. That said, there are some really beautiful melodies here and I think a few more listens will help me ground my thoughts of course.

@blush it's a bit more subtle, the songwriting is noticeably more slick and the dynamics are definitely more subdued which is fine but also a bit disappointing. I can def see why you and others might find this boring or w/e but honestly it's a defiant mark in the genre that theyve basically carved out themselves; a self-aware, modest cornerstone that they can look back on as a piece they are all probably truly proud of. I can hear it too, I find solace within this music and I think Evan does too especially. Not as emotionally poignant as Cardinal nor as exciting but it's quite technically good and the melodies are prob at their best.

Anyone else feel like the sequencing is weird? I'm sure I have more but—despite me thinking that Rings is probably the best song on the record, I don't think it's a great opener. I also think Darkness comes way, way too late.

A part of me feels this record is a somewhat underwhelming follow-up to Cardinal...yet a part of me keeps wanting to revisit it and with each listen a new lyric or sound jumps out at me. This one seems like it will take more spins to really warm up to but I am perfectly fine with that.

Agreed on the sequencing. Think I would’ve had it this way:
Intrepid, Portal, Thanksgiving, Darkness, Paterson & Leo, Rings, Angelina, Amulets, Skylight, Light On

Yeah the sequencing is a little off, feels like the songs were conceived with thorough depth and consideration and then just thrown into a shuffle order almost.
Also I feel like re-doing Angelina was not 100% necessary as the live session recordings of it on YouTube sound near-identical...still a cute tune, but doesn't seem like it really belongs here
