Yeah I get some Fall of Troy vibes here too. Like if their Doppelganger-era was slickly produced and way less chaotic and if Anthony Green did vox. But they do have a sound of their own. Good stuff.

wasn't there another review for this?
if you think this sounds like The Fall of Troy boy oh boy go check out their song "Ow! (SPLIDAO) I Like It Though" which straight up jacks a riff from Ghostship in the first 20 seconds.

Only listened to this once so far but it's better than Culture Scars but doesn't hit the highs of Wake for me. Kind of feeling like a 3.3 or so but I imagine it'll grow on me with time. The album ends on a total low note for me though.

Yeah I wanted to 5 this, then it dipped and I was wondering where all the memorable moments from Wake went, but now it's growing on me again. I think a 4 is fair. It does have a rather anticlimactic ending though.

Mental Knife feels to me like it was written to be enjoyed from a songwriters perspective more than a virtuoso. When you have the talent these guys have, I'm sure shredding comes easy. Writing thoroughly impactful songs that have a lasting structure without needing to make it complicated to keep it interesting is insanely difficult and each song here has so much value beneath the surface.
This is true musicianship.

it might be because I was listening to new Emery before this and that put me in a weird frame of mind, but this was pretty meh on second listen.

i also think its not overly complicated listen, but theres certainly some beauty behind hails's complex & chaotic song structures that might not unveil first few listens. i love the drummin here btw, but donovan hardly dissapoints when it comes to dem chops

Wake had some really good lyrics, shame that level of quality didn't last

Yeah each song told a story; the lyrics were actually a highlight of that album. Hanging Revelation is probably their most emotional song. Amazing imagery on that one

Oh and how the first two songs tell the story of going on a murderous rampage

I've actually never been too drawn to their lyrics, even on Wake. They've always come off as wanting to sound smart and I don't know, I just don't feel like his writing comes across super authentic.
I mean, Donovan has songs named Substance Sequence, Suffocating Syndrome, and Disappearing Syndrome. Like dude, relax. Not everything needs to be so serious.
