Derek Grant continues to prove himself as one of the best drummers in pop punk, with songs like “I Can’t Believe” and “Throw Me to the Lions” showing some of his most tasteful, technical and forceful playing to date.

ya Derek rules. i know ppl tend to say this about mediocre or unremarkable musicians who happened to be members of great bands but Derek truly is an awesome drummer even though you dont see him going in for any technical nonsense or wankery. punk is generally not a genre where you get to show off so i totally revere those players who can do as much clever shit as possible within the confines of relatively simple songs without derailing the song or coming off like they're just cramming a buncha their own shit in the song for no reason; i revere them far more than the technically proficient wankers. if you listen to like any Derek track he's always able to fashion an interesting drum part outta the really standard rhythms that are built into Matt and Dan's songs; most drummers woulda just phoned it in and played the same old boring generic beat for four bars and then repeated dat shit for the duration of the section (or even for the whole fuckin song) and 95% of listeners wouldnt have batted an eye but Derek's always got a really cool variation up his sleeve. like even the chorus of Demon and Division where he coulda just kept a steady beat right thru, but instead he changes the feel every two bars with a different variation each time.

"pretty sure they've always done this"

I literally had my Parkway Drive review featured when I first put it up, and then they removed it for no reason. Only Contrib and Staff reviews were up.

staff/contrib reviews of new releases generally get preference for features over user reviews of new releases. makes sense. anyway user reviews definitely still get featured plenty; as with this album, if its a fairly noteworthy new release and theres no staff/contrib review of it (yet) and the review is pretty good and theres not a buncha other new staff/contrib reviews that are feature-ready, then the user review will probs get a feature!

Rowan: from my first listen I'm really into the opener, Demons, I Can't Believe, Goodbye Fire Island (maybe my favourite), Heart Attacks, and Throw Me To the Lions. You?

there's not a single song I'd even call subpar tbh. I think my top 3 is sitting at Stay, Demon and Heart Attacks, least fave is I Can't Believe

also, yeah, Derek is a fucking machine on this album and it's probably his best performance

Love your onion knight avatar, BlackTaxi2d. Not really feeling this like everyone else, but I'll keep listening to see if it grows. It's definitely their best since Crimson, but even Crimson wasn't that impressive.

I love this thing, however, I can also see that it is pretty safe musically and structure wise. Probably won't be a top ten by year's end but I can see top twenty, possibly top fifteen.

wouldn’t be a 5 for me had this not been my favorite band and come out at a point where i really needed to hear a record like this tbh but it’s still the best thing they’ve done in a considerably long time and it’s so nice seeing them get this kind of recognition

Been some nice returns to form this year from bands, except, you know, the one that should be erased.
