"I think I still prefer their Holy Mountain style"
You and me both dude. That's the thing with classic albums though. You can't and shouldn't try to emulate what made that shit so special. Such albums can only be written once.

not a fan of Dopesmoker. i think this strikes a nice balance between the engaging nature of Holy Mountain and the droning of Dopesmoker.

Their guitarist is the same. Why the hell would he play in two bands that play similar music ?
|

I mean playing in multiple similar bands is not an unheard of concept but gee whiz thanks for your input

ok then, the sound is very different compared to high on fire, slower, doomier, fuzzier, etc, also the vocals are quite different

if they had included "the clarity" and "leagues beneath" on this album, i would have 5'd it and bought it without second thoughts

A lot of musicians play in bands that are very similar to their other one. Why they would do it is a good question though.

I kinda feel they use the 2nd band as an outlet for ideas they can't explore in their original bands for various reasons

A good example of this is Candlemass's bassist, Leif Edling. This guy has several projects under his supervision and most of the time the music sound pretty much the same. When asked in an interview why he writes music under different band names he said there are different reasons every time.

When he formed Avatarium, the music that appeared on their debut was originally written for Candlemass. But Candlemass's policy during that time was "we're not going back to the studio". Of course, the music evolved and later on, he claimed that Avatarium's music wouldn't "fit" for a band like Candlemass because they're more of a metal band.
After that, he wrote music for The Doomsday kingdom, a new project he saw as a vessel for his new ideas. Avatarium at that time had been finishing their 3rd album and were also on a tour so they couldn't be used for that album.
At the end of the day, it doesn't matter if Edling's music sounds pretty much the same to most of the fans. From where he stands, there are subtle differences and he doesn't want to alienate too much from what Candlemass delivers. And that's why he creates all those side-projects.
Sometimes, other reasons prevent him from releasing music under the name of Candlemass.
I think those are the main reasons that musicians play the "same" music with different bands.

yeah, i was able to surmise that, but as someone who writes music, i just dont get how you could be artistically fulfilled being involved in multiple projects that dont differ all that much from each other. oh well, whatever makes them happy, they should do it.
