At a first glance "A Ridge Where The Tall Pines Once Stood" may appear functionally a transitional interlude between tracks, merely furthering lyrical themes and restating the tone of the album, however, it is probably the most apt encapsulation of Austin's maturation, musical progression, and the deepening of his humanity. Might be my favourite moment on the album.

Checked out the second half today. Hearing a country/bluegrass tune dump on Donald trump was a surreal experience, to say the least.

"Håkan's song" was written during the " Roads to the north" writing sessions and recorded just after the album was finished. The track is written for my oldest son, Håkan, whom my wife and I have cherished and learned so much from thus far." - Lunn's Bandcamp.



Austin has personally lived in Norway, and his son bears a Norwegian name. He's a rather private lad, but it's clear that Norwegian is personally significant to him. Finally, he moved to Minnesota years ago, and now operates a beer brewery, under the title "Hammer Heart".

Lol Austin is more black metal than most of the second wave dudes were back when, and definitely more black metal than they are now. Dude breathes the genre.

As The Spirit has said, this album, for however grand it peaks, manages to maintain a small-town folksy charm. My love of Austin's work, and just Austin as a person, and the sincerity of his music and themes makes it really difficult to be 'objective. This keeps growing on me, and I might have to bump it to a light 4.5.



With every release I seem to love his past work more. Roads and Autumn are aging spectacularly. Sentiment can be hard to separate when an artist is this wholesome.

Austin's "pagan" European heritage seems quite important to him, and paganism as a concept imo kinda fits well with the whole anarcho punk thing, too. His music's had pagan bm influence since the s/t and some of the artwork for the band (and logo) have obvious pagan influences. So ye he's always had a weird infatuation with "muh heritage" but I'm p sure he doesn't like Nazis so who cares.

white dudes obsessed with their "ancient european heritage" are often racist dickheads (see: norwegian bm), so pointing out Austin's not-racist dickheadedness is probably worth mentioning given how he litters panopticon with pagan stuff.
