The reality is that popular country has always been kinda crappy, it's always been the "underground" artists that made the best stuff - the "outlaw" guys in the 70s, the alt-country ones in the 90s and past

As I said I respect the old guys too, I just think that the best modern stuff is equally good if not better. Writers like Jason Isbell, Lucinda Williams, James McMurtry, Steve Earle, Sturgill Simpson, hell even Ryan Adams at his best are the equal to any of your Hanks, Willies, Townes', Guy Clarks and so on.
