Love the guitar work half way through Illuminate.

After a few listens, Stuck is still my favourite on here

Only album I really checked was Coal and it was pretty heavily carried by the singer's voice, instruments were pretty lacking

If you want Leprous albums where the instruments shine more, check TPS and Bilateral. Stellar albums

Didn't know they had a new album coming out. I really got to be in the mood for these guys. When the time is right, they are an easy 3.5 to 4, but then there are times when I am just like shut the fuck up.

This is my favorite album from these guys. It's definitely not your average prog, and it's not even the same kind of quirky stuff they did in the past. Most of the metal influence has been replaced by electronic inlfuences (even if they're done on keyboard and guitar).

"but then there are times when I am just like shut the fuck up."

Because it's so vocal-driven at this point imo

What's wrong about being vocal-driven? Most music on the planet is vocal-driven. Is that a shame? I don't think so. It feels like people are blaming them for having found their own style instead of just throwing prog metal tropes together. Leprous aren't prog metal anymore, they are their own thing and that's a huge part of why they are still relevant.

I'm not saying it's necessarily a bad thing, but I can see it being an issue.

I should clarify that by 'vocal-driven' I mean music that is essentially carried by the skill of the vocalist with less instrumental usage/interest. Essentially the voice is always at the spotlight and doing the most exciting things while the rest of the band pales in comparison.

Yeah, I obviously won't disagree about the vocals being the most striking thing of the music, but there is a distinct collaboration between them and the instruments - while the vocals deliver the catchy melodies, the instruments perform their odd rhythms beneath it, for example in the chorus of Captive. And I don't think the instruments pale from a technical perspective. They don't sound as flashy, but the rhythms they play aren't particularly easy to pull off

I see your point, but I see the other side as well. It's like if people had watched the Expendables trilogy and all the cool action and one-liners, and then the fourth one came out and it was a freakin drama or chick flick or something. People would be justifiably upset. Following the same thought, if people started saying "What's wrong about being a drama? Most movies on the planet are dramas." you can see where that line of reasoning doesn't really apply.

@Willie: I mean I'd understand that people would be angry at the situation of a film being promoted the wrong way (and maybe the people responsible for all I care), but that shouldn't damage the quality of the work of art itself. It still stands on its own, at least it should.

Sure, I'm aware that most people watch movies that way - having a distinct expectation and judging the film based on how well it fit that expectation. But I still think that way of looking at art is interfering with doing the individual piece of art justice, so to say ... I mean, art is not a rendition of services. I've always been annoyed by things like people disliking Straight Story because it "isn't strange" like other Lynch movies and stuff like that, come on, art is meant to surprise, to be creative and stuff. As an artist, you don't sign a contract with the devil (or the fan base) of writing the same music or filming the same films for the rest of your life.

But yes, like I mentioned, I know that it's the way most people approach art and music in particular, and while I don't support it, I accept that they feel that way.

There's certain albums that took me years to appreciate because they were so different from what their previous releases lead me to expect. "One Second" from Paradise Lost and "Recipe For Hate" from Bad Religion are two that come straight to mind... and this isn't nearly that drastic of a change.
