They probably jammed the new Nick Cave
If they really are splitting up next year it'd sure be nice to get a studio recording of Sealed to Me and any other unreleased songs.

This is like walking through an ethereal shroud in the dead still of a lonesome night plagued with thunderstorms. It's dark, heavy, gorgeous. Not -quite- the hype it's chalked up to be, but Batter Up is the most incredible ending to an indie rock album ive heard.

@ dede: totally agree, that's the vibe I get too. My first two listens were alone in the dark at like 1 AM while it was calmly storming outside and it was an incredible fit

Unwound - Leaves Turn Inside You seems to be a strange rec. or is it a nod to a big shift in songwriting style?

kinda that as well as its status as a very final-sounding record for a cult classic band that massively influenced post-hardcore and similar genres. The sound on its own may not necessarily overlap much between the two, but ultimately those suggestions don't have to be confined to that - they're just records I think people should check out if they like this and haven't yet heard them.

Lol ash I was merely poking fun, we must simply be on the same mental wavelength. Also I read this review thoroughly (first time was just a skim) and this is really good stuff. I'm not even sure my review will flow as smoothly tbh. Glad you're loving this album, it gets better every time for me and is already above Deja. With time might top Daisy as well...TDAG is still in its own class.

@ kingdedethefifth
I don't think that this album may be described as "heavy". It is eerie but in sort of ephemeral way.
I agree that this album grows with every play, though. I stand by my initial statement that it doesn't sound like "the old Brand New", but still it is way better than expected after "I am a knightmare".

I wish that song at the end of Out of Mana was an entire song.

I feel the same Sowing. Devil & God and Daisy are two of my most listened to albums from 2013-2016, so it's hard to judge this new one against them quite yet.
Also forgot to mention before but the recs on this review are on point.

"Can't Get It Out" and "No Control" are pretty terrible. I like the rest of the album though.
And Sowing 5ing this is like a mother telling her son that he is the best child in the world...

@ Sowing: Dude that's like, really high praise for me, thanks so much. This has definitely surpassed Deja for me and I feel like it and Daisy are interchangeable for 2nd. TDAG is still my favorite record of all time, there's just no touching it.
@ tlatla: "eerie but ephemeral" is a great way to describe it
@ Tuna: saaaame
@ Talons: haha thanks. tbh thinking of good recommendations is always the most tedious part of reviewing here - I never wanna leave it blank, but I don't wanna get anyone's hopes up with stretches, haha

I'm going to neg if you don't remove Leaves Turn Inside You from the rec by reviewer

side note: learned a bit of "451" by ear this morning and it's already one of the most fun songs to jam on guitar ever
