At least here we seem to have a pretty clear crowd championing Violet.
"Under the Stairs", "Over" and "Broken" are some of their best tracks and the rougher production totally works in their favour, but that can't be said for other cuts, which leads to an uneven listen. Still amuses me that you can only find "Nothing & Nowhere" on Imagica demos and not the actual album.

I like how many of the songs were redone

It's rough yes but it's also the closest they came to have a record with any resemblance of dynamics (besides the 5.1 live which I admittedly haven't heard), the re-recorded version of To Die For in Walking for instance isn't nearly as powerful as the N&N version imo, because it sounds so much flatter. Sadly heavy compression is a part of the game with this band, and that's the prime reason for why I can't see Violet as a step-up from N&N (and because, well, my Violet highlights are literally songs from N&N)
damn I'm a contrarian after all : (
this album is growing on me btw

Can't say N&N is doing particularly better than the rest strictly from a compression standpoint.

Ooh man I love Violet though. I remember summers where I'd hike alone in forests and listen to it. N&N sounds a bit too underproduced for me.

Violet was my first TBM album and it totally amazed me, but yes, it definitely is different while the albums that came after it are very similar in style. I also think that N&N is underproduced. It mostly shows when comparing the Violet remakes to the original songs

ahah keyword is "resemblance"!
The instruments in N&N generally have a thinner but crisper sound and the loudness is toned down, there's room to breathe missing from later albums, you can even crank up the volume a little bit without dying. To Die For is a great example, it has a lot of little details always audible and the calm parts are actually quieter than the climaxes (same story for Happy Birthday N&N vs Violet). Now the song is excellent either way, but WwS lacks the (relative, I'm not saying it's a masterpiece) dynamics of N&N, and consequently the haunting atmosphere and general power is just not the same.
This is To Die For, WwS above and N&N below: http://i.imgur.com/u4St7Xl.jpg
Same for others like Happy Birthday, the Violet version sounds closed and squashed, though I can understand that some may dislike N&N's drum sound: http://i.imgur.com/XKA4Qvu.jpg

DID YOU NOT KNOW?
Nah, Sab, I definitely get and also hear what you mean.
I prefer the "Happy Birthday" from Violet mainly for the vocals.
