Best two tracks for me would be Quiet World and Scarlett Heavens , which were the 2007 reissue bonus tracks.

What this says about the rest of the album is perhaps open to discussion , but with the forthcoming City Burials release its interesting for me to begin with this album and see how their sound progresses through their discography as they mature as artists

The Saw You Drown EP is golden indeed, Scarlet Heavens is legit some of the best gothic rock ever imo, shame they didn't feel like pursuing that direction a bit more.

As for the actual album, I think my favorite could be Distrust. Goths.

good review! I agree with the criticism on Guitars and vocals. I never listened to Katatonia beyond the odd song here and there over the decades and just jammed this based on a best of 1998 video where this was mentioned among a number of awesome albums.

I was quite surprised by its utter lack of urgency and drive. I mean kinda fits the subject matter.

I like monotony in music a lot, but mostly if it is used as a stylistic element to intensify and take you into music that has some intense atmosphere which gets amplified by monotony. Here I don't feel any intensity at all...
