new Ab-Soul is very very good and I've never cared about anything the dude's done before

I don't "need" a review to convince me, I'm a pretty opinionated person. Hence, writing 3 music reviews a week. But, if you did convince me to give it another shot, which a common occurrence when I read a well written review about a an album I dislike.

Woops submitted it twice

Yeah. I wasn't trying to write a mind-blowing review because it's not really a mind-blowing album. It's just in my opinion, a personal best for Cole.

Poor poor sach doesn't know what to do when he gets called out
Is that ab soul record actually good? After the last features I've heard him on I kind of expected the worst

It's like Views all over again. Except this time the hype generated from my peers hasn't unintentionally made me enjoy the album way more than I would have if I ignored all the hype and there aren't any special personal events happening that make me that much more fond of it

@TheMrAlexK, I really agree with that first thing you said. A lot of them do say that mess.

This is actually pretty damn good tho. Seems like he wanted to release his own To Pimp a Butterfly and, in his own way, he really succeeds at it even if it isn't on the same level
|
| |
Uhm, this isn't even comparable to TPaB

Album Rating: 2.5
Yeah they're not on the same level but clearly J. Cole wanted to make something akin to it. I quite like the story on this album too but obviously the beats and lyrics are far weaker in comparison
|
| |
I don't see the comparison....to me, its like J Cole's trying to be like Tupac.

And TPAB was Kendrick channeling 2Pac in his style wasn't it? Also the jazzy beats also feel reminiscent of it, although they're likely not live instrumentation like it was for TPAB as well

I don't get why this is so hated. I know my rating and this album's average match but I could see justifying a 3.5 for this
|
| |
So could I, but a 4.0? thats way high for this. But I guess for me, most albums fall withing the 3.5-3.0 range. I rarely give super low ratings, examples would be M83's -"Junk" or Panic! at the Disco's new one.
But seriously, jazz is in so many rap albums. To compare this t o TPAB is insane, imo. TPAB is comparable to Black Messiah instrumentation wise, and lyric wise Vince Staples "Summertime '06" would be closer. Lamar's album was incredibly unique, it stands alone, this blends in, it feels cliches. I've heard beats like this in the early to mid 90's on Tupac and such. TPAB went way beyond that on purpose, and I don't think Cole's even attempted to get up there. But you're entitled to you're opinion, just don't see it man.
