What I've come to learn on this site is that "good taste" isn't so much the "quality" of the music you rate but more of the diversity of your ratings, if you get what I'm getting at
It's both. However, both of those things are subjective and controversial and are never going to be clearly defined in anyone's head but your own.

"diversity of your ratings" just means that you listen to as much music that you don't like as music that you like.
Idk about you but I prefer to listen to music I expect to enjoy going into it, hence my generally skewed ratings.

I see it as actively trying to expand my musical appreciation. I take chances on some bands and albums and occasionally it doesn't work out. For bands like this, I grew up listening to them and keep up on them for nostalgic reasons.
I do see where you're coming from, though, as generally I listen to what I will most likely enjoy.
