That's kind of cool that you got the answer specifically from Andy, but I mean it takes too much from black metal for it to not be at least vaguely be black metal. I mean it's certainly no Darkthrone or Burzum but the unique bark of Andy is definitely black metal-esque.

I completely agree, To me the sound is close to pagan metal too, but the fact that the genre is named Pagan and Andy doesn't sing about paganism also makes him say that he's not doing Pagan metal.

This album is more melodic and less black metal but I agree, he's closer to folk black than folk metal to me.

But his interpretation of his music tells a lot about where he wants to go musically with Saor and that's something I like to see.

I would call this album pretty squarely folk metal, with the heavy strings and rhythmic elements -- in additional to the not-screamed vocals and the clean ones on Hearth. but what do I know.

This one reminds me a lot of Roads to the North in that it's a band whose roots are squarely black metal, but uses their foundation to iterate differently around that core sound. Roads specifically because I get some melodeath influence here and there

Personally I think this is still a fairly even blend. Like a truly 90 percent folk/atmosphere album with only some black metal would be more like Eldamar to me. Although in the end it doesn't totally matter where it lies because it's still a fantastic album.

it's got elements of Sognametal, with earthy tones and a rustic flavor

Haha got negged, any reason? I'd actually appreciate constructive criticism if it wasn't well written

1. someone doesn't like the reviewed album

yeah everyone gets negged and a lot of them are for no good reason. this is a pretty sweet review, and I like the quotes. similar style to my review of Isis' Absence of Truth.

This delivered in every sense, exceeded expectations in fact. I'm feeling a tentative 4-4.5 but I'll let her digest a little longer before rating
