Yeah I agree @Asleep - and really this isn't all that out of left field considering some of the hints of this sound (i.e. "Beth/Rest" "Woods", etc.) and not to mention his work with Volcano Choir. I'm diggin this and I'm glad he continues to get stranger instead of more accessible

Yeah this is some heavy duty shit - Moon Shaped Pool, Skeleton Tree, and this - such cerebral, textural releases this year from some of my favorites

And Full I may actually agree with you there, or at least I'd say this is on par with his debut

Same Ryus. It just wouldn't be special like Emma is, it's a one-time thing.

The way I see it (and I guess Justin felt that way about his music), For Emma is basically a self-invention album as Bon Iver, a simple, acoustic-driven folk record, following an especially difficult period in his life. The self-titled is amore grandiose, clean and perfected version of the sound (that doesn't mean that it's a better record, just that it's more thought out and polished). So basically after those two albums this could have went only two ways for this Bon Iver project: 1. It ends, because Justin isn't interested in either going back to the basic acoustic sound, nor repeating the more polished second album. 2. Or he has to re-self-invent again as Bon Iver by writing another record about loss and self-doubt in a short album, which is why I'd written earlier that For Emma and this are actually very similar albums in that sense.
Nothing on this record is all that difficult or dense, or outrageously experimental, it's actually a pretty simple folk album, with some nice glitchy electronics taking up the place of quiet shakers, very simple drums and what sounds like a squeaking chair and occasional hitting of the wood on the guitar on For Emma. So the nice little elements that give charm to the sound of songs has been changed, but that's about it.

After the edit, this review's rather great. I haven't agreed with a single assessment of this album I've read so far, but this was well-written.
