Agreed, this is very very good but lacks any really amazing songs like Bunker Buster or Death.

best songs are probably "Sense" and "Forbidden"

This isn't as immediately striking as their other s/t album, or frankly as good, but "Fever" and "Memory" are superb and I always enjoy the band's (and Women's) sound.

The sound is definitely the major draw here.

"The sound is definitely the major draw here."

By 'the sound' I guess we're talking about the production/aesthetic/style so no, it's not the only major factor
My usual argument between something being described as 'sounding great' as opposed to just being 'great'.
The raw demos to certain classic albums would have been lacking in the 'sound' department and yet the genius would most likely still be there, they would still 'be great' even if sound wise you could tell they could be improved on.
And other albums 'sound great' but something is lacking...these are usually the albums you describe as 'I should like this', but the magic ain't there and you can't force it.
Like this album for me. From my rating you can see that the distinction between 'sounding great' and 'being great' is pretty huge for me...and it leads to a fair few disagreements here lol

but see he wasn't talking about the production/aesthetic/style at all in the conversation they were talking about the actual songs/genre
but don't think too much into it it was a shitpost on my part

Row I've thought way too much into it xD
I'd say the style covers the type of songs/song writing plus singing style and even the type of lyrics if they're slightly genre typical - this ticks those boxes too
This album just doesn't tick any of the boxes relating to true greatness for me

wouldn't expect any less. check Gang of Youths first one you melon

I guess do you judge a film on just the sound, script and visuals or do you judge it on how it left you feeling, how much you went away and thought about it, how it fits in within the history of film and all you've seen, how successfully it transmitted a message or created another world...
You are judging 'the film' not the medium of film.
Music is similar and that's the equivalent stuff I guess sits outside of the nuts and bolts of sound a bit - it's set into motion by the medium of sound of course but it's something else. If an artist gets it right this is where true greatness lies.
|
| |
But a film can't give you feeling or a message unless it has sound, a script and visuals so you should be judging both???

You are judging both.
I just have to defend a lot of ratings here where I agree something sounds excellent but it doesn't connect or transmit anything deep or lasting for me, that is where I'm coming from I guess
I'm a believer that music critique is 99.999999% subjective and the 'sound' argument tends to be held up as evidence by the 'music ratings should be objective' crew

Despite the fact I found them incredibly boring live opening for Explosions in the Sky, I actually really enjoy this album - maybe more so than Viet Cong.
