first thoughts are this needs more listens to settle, but that's been the case with every TDH album so far.... can't comprehend calling it their best album after 1 listen but to each their own i guess

Only a few tracks in, but this is pretty fantastic.

The Most Cursed of Hands had my attention in a chokehold, captivated me as much as Abandon on IV

fuck it, album's at the very least worth a 4

just gotta deal with it personally not being an AOTY contender for me the way Act IV was last year

let the hype get to my head I think

great album regardless, still not sure where exactly it would stack up in my TDH ranking though

I will keep listening to see if it sinks in more, but this is one of the weaker acts imo.

Most definitely at least a 4. Probably going to end up a 4.5 for me, but I need to go through it 3-5 times before I decide. Doesn't jump out at me as much as IV or even III

It's definitely not as immediately accessible as the others, yeah

I imagine it'll grow though

I was going to be surprised to see it surpass IV. It's just such a darker tone than TDH usually uses, it's hard to match it up with their usual style of music. A few tracks capture it pretty well and really stand out though

Sorry for contributing to the hype for this. I do stand by my opinion though that it is a masterpiece. Then again, Act IV was pretty much a masterpiece too, just with one or two minor missteps.

seems you have a loose definition of masterpiece.

honestly I think part of the deal here is that Act IV was very much a record focused on fantastic songcraft (at the expense of a few fillers), whereas V is focused on moments, and thus it flows significantly better as a record/narrative but it's harder to latch on to individual songs.

The only thing that holds Acts back from "perfection" (however you want to define it) is the length. I can listen to them through, but longer albums usually mean people seeing more things as filler. II had the least, whereas IV and V seem to have a little more. They're still great musically, and IV is my favorite of the bunch. But this a story, and it doesn't really move along much in about a third of this Act imo

I don't know that it's super easy to latch onto its narrative or flow, either, really. But man, "Mr. Usher" is great - there's a part of me that really hopes Act VI will follow that kind of swing sound.

@calc no, i dont, actually. i havent called many things at all masterpieces. i genuinely think casey has a gift and his gift is on display more clearly than ever on this album. your opinion being different to mine doesnt diminish the weight of my opinion.

@atomicwaste casey has heavily hinted that act 6 is not going to be music. my guess is that it will be a short film or something. but who knows really.

in the Facebook Q&A last night, Casey was pretty frank with most of the questions, or if he really didn't want to answer something, he just wouldn't, but when someone asked if Act VI would be a film, he gave a very suspicious non-answer

so yeah, I'm betting it'll be a film

Act VI won't be a musical endeavor though. Judging from his recent livestream, he seems to plan some sort of cinematic project, but nothing is set in stone yet and he refuses to specifically talk about it unless he's sure about being able to deliver it.

edit: ninja'd, but yeah, he paused when asked if it was something cinematic, so he was probably contemplating to share that info and then just went 'I don't know'

he said later in the q&a thing he wasn't going to say it's gonna be anything specific yet because if plans change then people would be like "oh well what about that time you said it was gonna be ____"
