Yet another great album. Not as special to me as the last one yet but maybe it will become that way soon. It's at least as good as the last one though.

I've probably listened to this record about five times and I still can't bring myself to rate it. I feel like it's somewhere between a 3.5-4, which is somewhat disappointing for Russian Circles in my eyes. I'm glad others are enjoying it though.

With regards to Overboard... I think it's a bit misjudged, personally, to call it a weak track, because it's not a track that's meant to be enjoyed, necessarily, on its own merit. It's there as a necessity to help with the albums pacing and balance. You need long stretches of quiet to give the loud more meaning. Album would feel like a slog without Overboard because it wouldn't be as dynamic or narrative. It needs that song to serve as respite from the chugga chugga. It's not a particularly fun or interesting track on its own, no, but the album needs it. It's a selfless track designed to make the "whole" more complete.

Thanks FoS but I think I made a mess of trying to articulate my point. I don't know if I'm in the minority or not with my opinions, but generally, I find the dynamic arc of an album/song to be one of the most important aspects of music, even moreso than melody/rhythm in a lot of cases. The moments that an album chooses to hit these high points and low points throughout its runtime is what really paints the album's narrative for me, and if an album paces that element well then it helps it to feel like a cohesive and wandering journey, rather than a collection of songs. It also makes things more visual and immersive when you get this image of a massive valley (like Overboard) cut away from the monolith mountains on either side (Afrika and Calla). And the more variety of music, the richer the image that is painted in my mind.
So I don't really give a shit that Overboard doesn't have any interesting melodies in it or anything. I wouldn't ever choose to listen to it on its own. But for the purpose of the album it's just as important as the other, much more fun songs.

I feel the exact same way about 'Nightvision' from Daft Punk. As a standalone track it's a bit plain and almost directionless but within the context of Discovery, it's a perfect interlude.
An intentional lull, I guess!

Very skeptic about this being a 5, as they are the quintessential "solid" post rock band who have a way of making every album a 3 or a 3.5. But will check. Decent review, a bit tooo glowing maybe.

Love albums that manage to craft a cohesive experience or journey, I find that's what often sets them apart in their respective genres

And to do it wholly instrumentally is no mean feat.

at that point it was all fuckin saturated. Isis had their last hurrah by April but broke up the year after. and FoE broke up in 09 too don't forget. Storm of Light aren't that good I realized.
