Haven't listened to this yet but really well-written review, Mmhmm and FANSD are the bomb and I'm glad this is drawing similarities

Give it a listen!
I was done with these guys. Was since I started college 8 years ago. Just was cringing too much. But his voice has gotten *really* good and this album, barring a couple slow songs, is super melodic throughout and hard to dislike.

You consider FANSD cringy?

Not sure how to react to this right now. Some tracks are decent and catchy, but none of them are grabbing me in any sort of meaningful way. Also, some of the lyrics are dumb as hell. I miss the blatantly religious Relient K, at least they were being who they are instead of singing about cats. This is either a 2.0 or a 4.0, and probably won't be anything in between until I can figure out if I like it.

Really excellent, well-written review. I was hoping to do one as a follow-up to my review of Collapsible Lung but I am not sure if I should or if I have anything of value to add. Agreed on basically everything.

"some of the lyrics are dumb as hell"
they've almost always been like that, lyricism was never their strongest point tbh.

Yeah I agree, I think I've just outgrown it to some extent
I'm listening again now and liking the whole album a little more, might be a slight grower. Probably won't end up rating this until it's had ample time to sink in

Maybe not their strongest lyrically, but I still think there's a number of great lyrical moments.

release an album with 16 songs at least 8 of them will be decent.
...working on cutting this down and giving it a proper order in a playlist.

I haven't listened to this, are Relient K still pop-punk goodness

Not surprised you like that one as to me it sounds a lot like the Dear Hunter's last album.

As far as lyrics go, I think the style on this album is much stronger than their pop-punk-ier stuff (all the goofy pop culture references on their first two albums, various songs from Five Score.) There are a few weird spots, but I find them good overall. Admittedly, very subjective when dealing with this type of music.
Side note, I could never ever get into The Dear Hunter no matter how hard I tried. They're a very competent and creative band, just none of their songs ever pulled me in at all. Probably doesn't help that I find the whole concept really weird and off-putting, but I have the same issues with their non-concept albums.

Realizing I kinda get a mmhmm vibe from local construction, which is awesome.

I'm definitely coming around to this more. It helps to trim the fat down to about 12 tracks.

Is Flowers your favorite track Sowing? Being from Northeast Ohio, Mrs. Hippopotamuses' makes me happy haha.

I agree, cut maybe 4 songs and this would've been an easy 4.5 for me

glad you dig sowing. yeah, this could have been closer to a 4 for me without some of the weaker tracks

Flowers is without a doubt the best song here. But the song about Ohio is cute yeah. I'm a football fan so I find it amusing that anyone would say let's hear it for the Cleveland Browns. They must be talking about booing.
This is on par with FaNSD for me, but I'm weird and like Five Score the most.
