I do not agree with the first 2 paragraphs at all and I think those make you seem kinda narrow-minded when it comes to music, which I know you're not.

I also think the album is about as bad as you said, but you could have spent more talking about the album in question rather than about kanyes career.

@guitarded_chuck:

"Sure, you will never be able to live a day nor minute in one's shoes completely based on reading the written description thereof, no matter how articulate that writer is, however I think every good music review should be at minimum able to succinctly defend it's reasoning in direct regard to the music itself."

No. The most mediocre reviews hide behind that premise. They are everywhere! Reasoning behind perspectives? That does not sound good. Is it the way you compose your reviews? It is not a doctoral thesis, you are not supposed to "prove" anything. It is only another medium to make one's opinion appear superior to somebody's else. Do not confuse talking about the music with reasoning. The art of writing about music is not the same and the logic for geometric demonstrations.

However, good writers do need to be articulate. But that is another thing, and therein lies the trick.

music reviews are monotonous by nature. it's usually a chore writing about albums like these

I disagree because to do otherwise would simply be stating a long-winded opinion and would come off as pretentious as opposed to justified.

there's no real criteria for 'justifying' something subjective. it's unjustifiable. all you can hope to do is state the reasons you like or dislike it, and it will be a good reference guide to those who share your perspective

But reviews ARE long-winded opinions!! And the reasoning makes them even more pretentious!! And justified to whom? Are we on trial, or something?

But you disagree, and that is enough.

That's pretty much exactly my point yeah

So long as reasoning is given it can't be pretentious. What is pretentious is stating "I like this" or "I don't like this" without any sort of explanation as to how or why and then spending the rest of the review not even talking about the music. That sort of review is totally useless IMO.

Ed production values are important, for some electronic genres they're perhaps even the most important concern, but for an artist of this stature operating in the field of pop/hip hop the argument will always feel like a cop out to me.

"Reasons" upon "reasons" and we do not agree. That is how valuable and effective reasons are. ;-)

Gyro I also agree that the second half of the album is an improvement on the first half - '30 hours' and 'Real Friends' are the only songs that I'd label 'quite good', not a massive fan of 'Waves' though.

I'd still say neither song really develops enough through their runtimes
