not tryna sound like a pretentious twat but honestly i dont think i really like bebop and early jazz and that kinda ish, free jazz is the only type i love but i really love it. most other types of jazz albums continuously disappoint me. except black saint and the sinner lady, no shittalking is allowed for that album

There's a lot of great post-bop and hard-bop and third stream, but yeah a lot of the earlier foundational (non-vocal jazz) stuff holds almost no interest for me at all, even if some individual players (Coleman Hawkins) still have quite a bit of personality on their instruments

i do like a lot of post-bop and hard-bop that i've heard, but none of it rises above ~solid 4 territory. its good but i just dont connect w it all that much.

I feel that. I definitely actively enjoy free jazz more than, say, post/hard bop, but the latter still has a time and place. The pinnacle of hard bop is Coltrane's BLUE TRAIN imo, the perfect example of showcasing one's creativity and talents while still "coloring within the lines" or whatever.

Also what a great review, the second half with the dual rythm sections solos might be my favorite parts off this.
