Who says otherwise? A band can move forward and at the same time maintain some of the elements that have made it what it is.

some people are mad because they think that dream theater remains the same sound throughout most of their albums, but when they actually do something new, they are critisized for being too alienating

"If Portnoy was playing on here, almost nobody would complain"
Portnoy's absence isn't the reason the band's music is average though, but I know what you mean.
The production is so dull on here, damn Petrucci really needs to rescind his duties

Eh I don't think they've done something new on here though. But yeah, differentiation is a lot of times unfairly criticized.

Agreed. Nevertheless, I like what I'm listening on here. Not a great album but not bad either.

i hope DT won't go down the same road that yes have

I think it may be too late for the band to redeem itself, and frankly it doesn't look like they have the ability to truly progress and experiment

I actually think the production on this is great. Then again, not everyone is on board with a cleaner sounding DT.

Album Rating: 2.0 | Sound Off
As cheesy as the premise is, there's potential for fun and thoughtful exploration. However, the album doesn't take advantage of, well, anything. The production is ripped right out of Dream Theater, which is fine, but the music isn't nearly interesting enough to carry 2 hours worth of music. This is something that would work if they took an approach similar to Nightwish on Imaginaerum, offering some sort of an actual visual aide and stimulation (I think they'd have to take it further). As I said in my review, the lyrics really boil down to telling us stuff, but other than the character portraits, we have little to no idea of what to envision. Ambiguity is important, and in a concept album there needs to be a more mindful direction. It feels like watching Memento without the black-and-white scenes. I'd take half the material if it meant getting better music per track.

I'm shocked at how much I enjoy this, but then again, I expected a boatload of cheese given the premise.

whats wrong with the production......mighty fine if you ask me
|

Lifeless, dull, and lacking dynamics imo. But most of DT's self produced albums face the same issues

those 3 opinionated attributes have nothing to do with production
|

Why not? I'm taking the engineering and mastering to be a part of the production.
If you don't want them under the umbrella term, then fine the engineering and mastering of the album aren't that good :P

engineering + mastering does not equate to lifeless + dull + lack of dynamics
