he certainly comes off that way on this, to me at least. again, i love david bowie. he's made some of my favorite albums ever, i am just not a fan of this at all. i think the title track is easily one of his worst

pretentious is as good a word as any to describe somebody's view of a piece of art. Two people can consider the very same piece of music energetic and tiring, or sad and boring. The same way two people can consider the same piece of music intelectually rich or simply pretentious. A matter of opinion. But yeah let's just ban a word

It's the context in which it's used. Suggesting something like (Bowies latest album is a pretentious offering) is just fucking ridiculous.

Over indulgent, flouncy, wanky or the good ol fashioned 'sprauncy' are what you're looking for.
