"boring Mastodon"

redundant. Mastodon and boring are synonymous.

I think they're fun for sporadic listens.

Habitual Levitations was a bit of a let down but the rest of their discog is pretty consistently great and tbh I'd say they sound more like Baroness than Mastodon so er
yea nah

Never really got into this band, but I'm hoping this might change things. Also loving that osdm-ish album art

Nice review but saying both innovative and original in the first sentence is kind of redundant they're basically the same

Deserves the "really good surprise of the year" award, waiting for Baroness' Purple. As many said, vocals and production are much better on this release.

One could compare to others (Baroness, The Ocean, Mastodon...) but I love their original progressive-post-math-metal-jazz signature music, especially those groovy and jazzy fretless basslines and constantly moving drums parts.

Must I go through their back catalog now? Cos I kinda enjoy this even though it's a bit wanky sometimes.

Or Baroness.

Like do you guys just group anything that sounds remotely 'sludgy' together? Jeeze.
