I don't either, just wondering what's up with that selective offense

and I'd be even more ok with it, were it not for the shitty, crass and superficial way in which it was done here

"and not to bring even more politics into grimes' music but why is she a feminist icon or w/e when she's so shittingly using the most superficial aspects of japanese culture to promote her music? not that i have anything strongly against it but isn't it weird?"

I didn't know u were so...tumblr

Keyblade: have you been under a rock for the last two years?! also, what 'promoting' lmao

chug: barely, man. And it's just as vapid (although definitely not as shitty as Avril's, that single was awful beyond words)

okay so again, why does being a feminist preclude her from using japanese culture to promote her music?

"and why is it a separate issue? is it because it's grimes?"

no, because they just are lol

well it's just one would think a feminist from a feminism that prides itself in its intersectionality wouldn't be so eager to use cultural appropriation to vacuously promote her music tbh

ah gotcha. that would be assuming intersectionality on her part tho, and idk much about grimes to say either way

it's ok, just weirded out because feminism seems to have this perk of absolutely hating someone from the slightest thing, but then it loves others like Grimes (cult. appropriation) and Azealia Banks (sexist, homophobic) like ??????

people borrow music from other places all the time it's cultural exchange. as long as artists are conscious of where they get inspiration and respect it there's nothing wrong with drawing inspiration from elsewhere and it's not like she's completely ripping off japanese culture. and i don't think any of us really know what Grimes' beliefs are...

yeah there is a difference between cultural appropriation and cultural influence tbh and im not one to tell you where she falls on that spectrum but there is definitely a line between where it turns from a respectful homage to offensive, gross appropriation.

for instance, Nile, VERY heavy Egyptian influence. not cultural appropriation.

counter example;

MO and Major Lazer or whatever - Lean On

fucking blatant offensive downright despicable cultural appropriation.
