To me this just sounds like a band trying to make a Brand New record.. It's basically whatever genre Brand New is.. It's emo, but it's not geared toward bangers. It's not catchy and it's not necessarily accessible either. It's like a wanna be TDAG. That's the only way to put it. Mayday have stated that they love Brand New and I think this is their attempt at making a Brand New record and move away from what they've known. It's no TDAG for sure, but it's a very welcome release from a band that needed to shift away. Their Dead Friends EP was awesome and Romantics was taking that and expanding.. After that they went poppy, but then went back to their Romantics sound and kept that for 2 more records. They had to either evolve or keep releasing the same thing they've done before.

the influence is pretty blatantly expressed imo, but that doesn't mean it necessarily sounds like brand new. the whole darker and edgier tone, emphasizing on frantic cathartic screaming paired with very quiet and slow dreary passages to contrast. classic bonafide brand new formula, if i ever saw one.

that being said, it's not really why i have issue with this album.

I originally hated this, but it's gone from ear grating to being just above mediocre for me.

I don't think anything they do will ever top the Self Titled though.

"this sounds nothing like tdag what the fuck is wrong with you people jfc"

I think it's because the same producers worked on it.

I've never heard this band before today and the few songs I heard seem pretty good. Any order I should listen to the discog?

Chronological order should be ok, but Anywhere but Here and Monsters are weaker albums, so maybe you should skip those and listen to them later.

This started as a 1.5 for me and grew all the way up to a 3.5. Never had an album climb that high from that low before.

Also Storm. Self Titled Mayday Parade is best imo.

Definitely not as strong as ALIR and also not as strong as S/T, but definitely a better album than ABH and Monsters
