how is she trying to be seductive? i get a much more film-noir, smoky lounge kind of vibe from her music.

i mean idk I really like a good chunk of Ultraviolence and this but I despise Born To Die. I've tried so many times to get into it too :/ There is something about it that I can't quite put my finger on that I despise. Video Games and Off To The Races are great songs tho

born to die has way more musical variety than ultraviolence tbh, so i always get confused when people say it's more boring. and i would never make an argument for video games being as catchy as born to die or carmen

Ultraviolence is definitely more cohesive, but its whole concept just seems more interesting to me. And Born To Die isn't really varied either, it just is compared to Ultraviolence. And I really can't stand that whole pseudo-seductive tone and those lyrics on top of a sound that really isn't mine. I wouldn't even have listened to any of her albums in the first place, if my best friend wouldn't be really into her, so I guess it's not surprising she's not my cup of tea. I just can't see what others like about her.

i disagree about the variety. born to die, off to the races, video games, carmen, radio - all sound nothing like each other.

damn you guys suck. ultraviolence is hazy as fuck and consequently pretty homogeneous

The certain part of your review's intro made me think that you've ventured in an infamous member-only thread at a certain Lana message board, lol.

people on sputnik suck =[

i just can't understand how people don't like her aesthetic and go as far as to say they hate her.
I liked Born To Die and didn't mind Ultraviolence, but I can totally see how people don't like her aesthetic and more directly, how both Ultraviolence and yes, this, sound direly homogenous from start to finish. Not liking her schtick is definitely not a "Sputnik" thing.

Which part is that?

Like I said, I'm not that big of a fan, so I know nearly nothing about her personal life.

I feel like that Honeymoon displays a matured & sense of mastery of her brand of ballads / songs with hip hop beat influence.
Video Games for instance was nice yes. But it feels so.. thin compared to any ballad off of Honeymoon. And the hip hop samples / influences off that album felt so forced and obnoxious where as on Honeymoon, they are much more subdued, subtle, and delivered almost effortlessly.

I feel no sense of depth off of Born To Die. It felt more like an array of singles for I didn't feel any over encompassing theme that really tied it all together. It felt a bit too much like it was trying to entice the mainstream audience. Not a bad album per se, but I feel it to be the overall weakest release in her discography.

Paradise.. Paradise was a step forward imo from Born To Die. The instrumentation felt more dramatic and near theatrical at some points. Album had the best outro and music videos too I thought. It felt like it had a theme to it. Also, that Paridiso film was a very creative way to visually tie that album together.

Ultraviolence. I loved the vibe and mood of it. But you know, I feel the only downside to that album was the second half. It got to a point where the songs all feel that they blur together. Which is a shame. Cause, that bold almost 7 min intro Cruel World, Shades of Cool, & Brookyln Baby were on the brink of delivering a truely excellent album.

tl;dr imo:
Honeymoon>Paradise>Ultraviolence>BornToDie. :p

SamJ, look at tracks on BTD like Off to the Races, Million Dollar Man, Carmen. Those sound like mainstream songs to you? Even the singles like Blue Jeans and Born To Die didn't sound like your average pop song by any of the other female pop acts at the time.

my point is, yes, Honeymoon is deeper and more mature (like you said), but Born to Die wasn't shallow and mainstream like many people claim.

Also, I wish people stopped calling Paradise an album. It's really an EP.
