Review sounds more like 4.5 or 5. I mean there's nothing really wrong with this album except fron its length (judging from your review) yet it only gets a four. I guess people will always rate a 16th album from 2015 worse than a 3rd album from the 80s even if the former is actually a better record than the latter.

I like the cover but they could have made a badass Incan temple sacrifice behind him or something.

^ They could, but it would have been very racist and a prime example of cultural appropriation.

The Empire Of The Clouds fanboys will be upset that the song will 'definitely not' be played live

Is the opening of Shadows of the Valley some sort of self-reference, considering how similar it is to the main Wasted Years riff?

The riff ends with Bruce saying SEA OF MADNEEEEESSS so yeah probably.

Yes probably, and anyways, self-referencing at such a relatively small degree makes for an entertaining and amusing feature.

Really pumped to get my hands on my special edition copy tomorrow, been streaming it nonstop on Spotify the last two days, haven't listened to anything else this week!
What's different about the special edition?
