Well they might be on a slight decline, but at least they're doing things on their own terms as opposed to worrying about what the fans want

Uh-oh! I loved PL, never jammed Iconoclast, but had hopes for this.
Nice review, Omair.

Sweet review man, enjoyed the read. Just be careful about overusing names, particularly 'Romeo' in the first and second paragraph. Pronouns are the way. Otherwise great write-up.

Thanks Evo. Well Iconoclast would have been the guideline, but I'd say give it a try. I think you'll enjoy it. It's not a bad album, just not something that should have taken 4 years to make
@Scuro: Thanks for the feedback dude

Very well written review that I pos'ed even though I disagree with the raiting. Personally enjoyed the hell out of this album, and I thing it's stronger than Iconoclast. I can understand that many people will not dig this new "less melody, more heaviness" route that the band has taken since Paradise Lost, but I like it very much.
I see some comments comparing with Symphony X's current track record to Dream Theater and it's true in the sense that they made many masterpiece in their early years and because of that their later stuff seems pale in comparisment. And while I enjoy both old and new DT, as well as everything Symphony X, I think it's very hard for any band to keep up with their own legacy. I hope Symphony's next efforts won't be as polarizing as DT's.

Good review, dunno why it got negged, have a pos from me. I remember I quite enjoyed Iconoclast, it was solid although far from being their best work. I look forward to hearing this.

I'm sure this will be solid.
Good review.

I got negged because some people can't take different opinions.

Thanks guys. Well in my case the negger (:P) showed himself, so that's a change.
The album isn't bad by any means, but it took them 4 years to release another Iconoclast basically
@Chaotic: Thanks man. I think I let the expectations get the better of me to an extent. I don't mind heaviness, but I was hoping for more balance maybe. I think my review makes it seem as if I really dislike the album, which is not the case, but it's just more of the same I guess. They don't need to do the neo-classical thing again, but I want them to push their sound forward. But I guess it's always difficult to keep things fresh after 20+ years in the business.
And you're right, I think the fact that people compare albums to a band's classics doesn't help.

This is about on par with Iconoclast, which I thought was excellent as well, but good review. I can see how someone could listen to this and be bored to death by the potato salad production.

I really want to like this album. First impressions were pleasant enough, and I initially declared it better than Iconoclast. But after listening to it multiple times, I just can't bring myself to say that I fully enjoy it. What's most troubling for me is that the album can't maintain my interest; I lose interest after "To Hell and Back." Everything blends together way too much, and the energy of Paradise Lost is still mostly lost. It's mellow and an overall bore. But it may fare better live, so I'll be catching them back-to-back after an Alcest show.

I'm pretty afraid to listen to this. I actually loved Paradise Lost but thought Iconoclast was painfully average (so painful I have it a 2, which was a hard thing for me to do).
I really hope this is better than that...

So how cheesy is this? I used to love progressive metal but then one day I woke up and realized Dream Theater and bands like this are pretty much all the same.
|
| |
It's good, imho it's a simpler version of Twilight In Olympus; the band has not fled to convoluted arrangements.
The above said though, it adds nothing new to their back catalogue.

@Sowing, it's not THAT cheesy but I doubt you would like this anyways.
This is better than Iconoclast but that's not really saying much.

Liking this a lot better than the new BTBAM. It may even be on par with Iconoclast but I need a few more listens, haven't evenpicked out my favourite tracks yet

The t/t and Without You are probably the best one here.
And yeah this is better than the new BTBAM.
