@JT: "Seriously, bro?
Sorry Mongi you're cool and everything but wtf is this?"
I mean you're right, you're not insulting him directly, but I know that if someone said anything like that to me in response to me I'd probably feel like I just said the most idiotic thing ever. I might just be overly sensitive, but I think there are ways to correct mistakes (and Mongi, that was an incredibly minor mistake to make) without being inflammatory.
@Mongi: Think of psych as being an element of music rather than as a genre, if that makes sense. It's an adjective that can be applied to pretty well any genre there is, and a psychedelic atmosphere can be accomplished through a lot of different means - not necessarily keyboards. Take, for example, "Tomorrow Never Knows" by the Beatles. It's not alt-rock by any means, and it doesn't feature keyboards, but it still achieves a psychedelic effect by using a drone, a sitar, and off-kilter production.
So basically, psychedelic music can be a lot of different things, and shouldn't necessarily be labelled so specifically as "alt-rock with keyboards and a trippy atmosphere". It's much more general, and should be thought of as a characteristic of an artist's sound rather than a genre. Psychedelic rock is a genre, psychedelic pop is a genre, but "psychedelic" or "psych" is just an adjective. If that makes any sense.

@altertide c'mon dude you know as well as i do that that album is absolutely bonkers. I personally don't sense absolutely any beauty or artistic value in that album but if you like it then by all means enjoy it.

Well I didn't mean to cause offence. The "wtf is this" part was kind of tongue in cheek.
Anyway, psych is rarely related to alt rock, in fact it's one of the genres I'd associate least with the term psychedelic. A lot of modern psych is quite strongly linked with indie pop/rock and I'd say that's probably the most successful area of psychedelic music in the current music scene
And I agree with what Ocean said about psychedelic being an adjective more than a genre, as I said in one of my posts on the previous page.

nice, album puts me in a terrible mood

I don't get it, I mean it's FULL of catchy melodies, why people don't like it? Yes, there's a lot of weirdness going on but it's not Diamanda Galas or Metal Machine Music, every song is short and has at least one-two great hooks, so why?
|

But whatever, what I wanted to say is that it's hard for me to take your recommendations seriously when my favourite album of all time is your worst of all time. Not that there's anything wrong with that (well, actually there is, but I have to live with that :D), but I'm probably not gonna like what you like.

'thanks for breaking my heart yet again altertide'
'And so we meet again!'
'"Man you 1'd Trout Mask Replica"
Hey, what a coincidence, I did too!'
this my be the best page of responses that i've seen in a long time!!!!!!

@SoccerRiot that part of my response was meant for Torontonian, whose TMR soundoff goes "if i had to choose a worst album of all time.... this would be it".
@Titan Thanks, I guess

@JT what about shoegaze? That's a genre that I think would fall under both alt rock and psych and it's pretty big.
Also bands like the Flaming Lips oc

Never seen the connection between alt rock and psych. Especially since one pre-dates the other by over a decade.

Vivaldi pre-dates Yngwie Malmsteen by 300 years but there's still a connection between metal and classical music!
I mean shoegaze isn't psych in the same way that The Doors are psych but I don't know how else I would describe it tbh
|
| |
If you're making a connection between alt rock and any genre it should be punk because thats what it came out of.

LMAO I don't like him either SR
But umm that doesn't make any sense. Fusions can exist between two genres that are otherwise unrelated. Alt rock didn't come out of psych for sure but that doesn't mean that later bands couldn't combine elements of the two genres...

"every song is short and has at least one-two great hooks, so why?"
I find the vocals to be absolutely atrocious and the instrumentation to be completely devoid of soul, passion or rhythm. Everybody says that the album "makes me laugh" but it just annoys the absolute shit out of me. I personally don't listen to music to make me "laugh", thats what socializing and funny movies are for. To me it just sounds like its being weird just for the sake of being weird. But of coarse thats just my opinion and i'm definitely in the minority. If you like it though then thats greats cus enjoying music is generally great.

"@JT what about shoegaze? That's a genre that I think would fall under both alt rock and psych and it's pretty big."
Yes and no. Shoegaze is very much its own genre and I think we're kind of scraping the barrel if we look at psychedelic sometimes being used as an adjective with regards to shoegaze as a link between psych and alt rock.
The one time when alt rock and psych were quite strongly linked was during the early development of neo-pschedelia (so yes, The Flaming Lips) before it became more centered around indie and dream pop.
