Ok this rules fucking hard. Kinda sounds like Hooded Menace with clean vocals. Never heard any of their early albums, but if they're as good or better than this then I gotta check them asap.
Fuck I'm really, really impressed by this. Brings the filth. m/

Nice review mano. Think this just edges out above Draconian Times for me yet I still think Icon is a slight bit better than this.
Hawks check these guys hard man. Band is fantastic

The hype is definitely justified. However, if one is not a fan of the band he's not going to become one because of this album.
Appreciate the love guys. Linguist, thanks for the correction.

Hawks be aware PL released pure doom metal albums at the start of their career and later sounded as light as Depeche Mode with all bases covered in between (gothic influence, Metallica influence, etc). If you like the sound of all that then delve without fear - if not target the era.
For me their classic era is Icon/Draconian Times/One Second - '93-'98. Such a great guitar tone on these albums

Greg's riffing is phenomenal here. Gloomy, memorable and catchy as hell.
He is one of the most underatted guitarists of metal.

It's hard to have a unique guitar sound in metal but Greg manages it agreed

Good points. He also gets extra points for all the influence he had on every doom/death guitarist of the '90s.

Utterly dissapointed...
Getting back to the roots is one thing, writing good songs is another

Great review.
"I actually grew up listening to Paradise Lost"
Gothic came out when I was in high school and it was all very new and interesting. I think it was the first time I heard female singing to this kind of music. Was a huge fan until One Second, then PL became a boring Depeche Mode-clone and my tastes became more extreme.
But they slowly went back to what they do best.
I wonder why this is the album that comes with hype. Not complaining, cause I expected they were crashing into geriatrics territory. The Mackintosh guitar melodies are as beautifully epic as ever, the only great change is Holme's vocals. I guess it's what we needed.
Beneath Broken Earth is my favourite here, but Cry Out is... ugh.
