Tbh I found this review difficult to read, which has nothing to do with differing opinions. Just lots of misplaced commas and choppy sentences. It's not a bad review, just difficult to stay in a flow while reading. I agree that this is more pop-oriented, but she was never a true country artist to begin with and everything she made in the past always had this lingering hint of an artist pandering to her target audience and not being who she truly was. Red was a mess because she tried to do both, but this is like an awakening. She finally just goes for it all here - all pop bells and whistles included - and nails it. This is actually more authentic than any of her other "country" albums.

yeah her country albums are just cliches all over the place, this actually has an identity of its own

Not really a fan of straight Pop, but I think it's a great album within it's genre. I was forced to listen to it on a road trip with my sister, and I think accomplishes what it sets out to do. Just be catchy, simple, dancey music. Objectively, I'd say it's probably about a 2.0

Thanks for the feedback Sowing.

I think for Swift it was never a question of authenticity. Just as much as her earlier albums are to some point targeted at a certain audience, this is too. But both seems honest to me, like it was really just the way her taste developed and what she wanted to do at that point of her career. Pretty much like Avril Lavigne, who isn't doing too well either, but it's just a natural development, only in the wrong direction for me.

The thing with this LP is that I don't see the fun you guys see. And fun would be the only thing this LP could offer, since there is no depth in it whatsoever. It's her most cohesive record since "Fearless", which doesn't have to be bad necessarily, but with only so many interesting ideas to work with the whole thing just lacks variety. Which is even more important since the synth-pop sound she is going for here is nothing but the thing you do right now. Everyone looks back at the 80s right now, has synths, some simple beats and not much else. Of course that kind of pop can sound really good too, it just seems to me like it doesn't suit her. It shows a side of her I think is not exactly likeable.

Plus, the by far best track not being on the regular album doesn't help either. New Romantics is the only one that really embraces that synthetic party feel this kind of music is often defined by in all the right ways.

I even mentioned it in the review. It's an ok song, don't like the chorus though.

@tempest

Yeah, sure. For example I like her "Speak Now". Some 80s pop too, early Lavigne, Adele (if we call Adele pop), early Maroon 5. And if we go for the modern synth era, I think La Roux or Two Door Cinema Club did a fairly good job.

"1989" seems just incredibly stale to me. No feel at all in this and, again, most songs aren't that much fun to listen to in my eyes to compensate that.

@Kris: Fair enough, I don't expect everyone to embrace her new style. I too think that New Romantics is a jam, I have no idea how it didn't make the cut to be on the record.

@Jac: Ever since you edged me out of sputnik madness, I put a black mark on your staff application ; ) No but seriously, I hope you keep up the quality work, it's not going unnoticed!

@Arcade and everyone talking about KL and TPAB: I didn't even like the new KL, but there's not even a question that most of it is better than Bad Blood. The new certain of the song is especially ridiculous, although I won't complain about all the women casted in the video.

New Romantics really nails it. Would have been a kickass lead single, especially compared to "we've heard it all before" Shake It Off.

Disagree, but good arguments that make me see your point of view quite well. Pos'd.
