I mean I totally get how the reviewer connected to it though. I've had countless albums/songs come along at the exact right time, and I end up caring about the album a lot more than I otherwise would have.

i envy that, this is just mildly interesting indie rock to me and the vocals have quite a bit of character. i can vibe with the first half of the album but then my interest wanes

I already listened to this a few times and it didn't grab me.

"like the setting sun silhouetting the man as he beats his son."
Not sure what it is but this like is just immensely pleasing to read. Syllable game on point or something like that

this album has way less character than get disowned, it's pretty close to standard saddle-creek fare

i thought i liked the single version better but i think it's just because i was used to it. whichever version i hypothetically heard first would be my favourite

i've found that you always lean towards the better version with time as your familiarity with the earlier version wanes against your familiarity with the newer one; that is, if the newer one is better.
way too much good stuff coming out lately. between this, Kamasi Washington, Elvis Depressedly, Jenny Hval, Pet Symmetry, Mac McCaughan, Built to Spill, Hiatus Kaiyote, Nai Harvest, Turnover, BMDrummer's record, and that one thing by this person above me, haven't even had time to tell if the new Superheaven is dogshit or not.

when you come to enjoy a certain part of a song then it's missing from the other version. can be disappointing. but I haven't heard this example, just a general observation.

i think the new one actually has an extra part
