"Jon kind of needs to start taking his lyrics more seriously. It'd be a really nice change of pace
A darker DGD record could be exactly what they need"
I agree, that'd be pretty great to see them head in that direction

This is a strong AotY contender for me. I might bump this to a five after a couple more listens. I didn't think anything would surpass Kendrick this year but goddamn this is incredible.
Your review was really good too. It's one of the first in months I've actually read rather than skim.

Yeah, I am loving this. It feels like the album I thought Happiness was for so long
|
| |
This is the first album of theirs I'm hearing. I like it, but I'm just past that stage in my life where temper tantrum screamo appeals to me. Just barely though.
|
| |
"temper tantrum screamo"
|
| |
C'mon you can't deny that 40% of this or more is shrill screaming.
Maybe I'm generalizing but at a certain point in your life the metalcore/post-hardcore type of screaming-for-the-sake-of-screaming starts to get old.

I can see how someone could feel that but for me temper tantrum screamo is like silverstein or something
|
| |
The screaming here is much preferable to the Coheed&Cambria-esque vocals.
|
| |
Sowing I didn't know you were a fifty-something ;p
Screamo is an actual genre of music that is far, far away from this. And I mean, there are parts -with- screaming but there's also music involved in those moments??

ehh, even I wouldn't call this temper tantrum screamo. it's better than most vocalists in this genre in particular. It's the cleans are are that absolute worst on here.

"The screaming here is much preferable to the Coheed&Cambria-esque vocals."
Coheed and Cambria are a million times better than these guys

It is pree much the opposite of 'temper tantrum' music considering Jon Mess's silly-as-fuck lyrics throughout but
|
| |
Okay maybe I should clarify. This obviously isn't screamo. And the temper tantrum part is just because I'm 27 going on 50. And I'm not saying it isn't good for what it is.
I just think there's purposeful screaming and screaming that tries to appease a fanbase. Purposeful screaming is like a song that builds and builds with passion until screaming is required to convey the intensity of it. I feel like these guys scream because that's the genre, so we have to include it or people won't buy our Hot Topic T's.

ahhh that makes more sense

Yeah, I get what you mean, though I will say their debut is much more passionate and less "Hot Topic" than this.
Definitely a better introduction as well.

yeah the debut is way better than this

I personally find Jon Mess's lyrical content more conflicting than the inclusion of his harsh vocals- but one thing I do enjoy about this record is that what he's saying isn't necessarily too obvious
It helps contribute to a more serious mood presented on this album, even though I know the content must be more tongue-in-cheek than it currently seems

psh, jonny craig was and is the definition of hot topic
also mess should try some dark, more sensical lyrics?
