If you want to understand something you should have the desire to become knowledgeable in the subject. "Yeah, it sounds good" is an idiotic approach to music and can be applied to any topic across the board. You can't be fully immersed in something without a little work put into it.

quoting rym on sputnik lol
|

Rym has pretty accurate descriptions for genres. Try using examples for your argument next time, you dolt.

Johnny imagine you spent 20 years of your life where, inexplicably, the only song you had ever heard was "My Wish" by Rascal Flatts. Do you seriously think that, if somebody found your poor soul and handed you a copy of Unwound's Leaves Turn Inside You, you would have the wherewithal and context to appreciate it? I mean, you would "simply be interpreting/appreciating what you're hearing," right? That's what I'm getting from your argument.

I'm just saying you don't need to be a connoisseur of drone to have an opinion on it
|
| |
But you should at least know what it is. Saying things like "Wow, the song never changes" speaks otherwise.
|
| |
you can describe the sounds an emotions present without knowing all the technical ins and outs. God knows I don't know much about how musique concrete is composed, but it doesn't prevent me from connecting with the sounds in whatever way
|
| |
Ps I'm not necessarily defending everyone who doesn't like this album
|
| |
I'm just saying you don't need to be a connoisseur of drone to have an opinion on it
no, you implied that having any knowledge of a genre at all was not a prerequisite to enjoying a piece of music, hence my ridiculous example
nobody is arguing that you need to be a connisseur of drone to have an opinion on it
I and others explicitly said the opposite multiple times
remember? I said I have minimal knowledge, and you quoted me to say that minimal knowledge was not necessary
when I said it was
smh
|
| |
I agree. I don't think anyone is talking about the technical side of compositions. A basic, general understanding of a collection of sounds is all that's really required.

gonna agree with sea and guest 100% on this one. background knowledge/appreciation is essential, especially in analyzing more "out there" forms of music. of course everyone is entitled to their opinion, and thats fine, but is a completely ignorant uninformed opinion one you can take seriously?

don't act like anyone can jump into music with open minds johnny because most of the time that's not the case. and don't back off of this lol.

I live in a vacuum. Everything sucks.
|

not sure how you're going to explain your backtracking from disagreeing with my statement "I have relatively minimal knowledge of drone [and I am arguing that you only need a little context to be able to better appreciate x music]" to your "I'm just saying you don't need to be a connoisseur of drone to have an opinion on it."
like how are those at odds at all ugh

@Rel - I'm not, I'll fight this to the bitter, messy end. I just wanna finish my omelette first
