You say it's self-indulgence, but this is exactly the sort of review I like seeing on something that already has piles of reviews - honing in on a specific aspect and dissecting it as much as you can. Really great review too.
In the same vein of Devil and God though, I do feel like you get a lot more out of this with a religious background, even if they work really hard to make it accessible for people without christian knowledge. Like in The Sun and The Moon when he drops "there was hope for Job like a cut down tree, I hope that there's such hope for me" so early in the song, it sets the stage so much more if you know the background.
But yeah, [4]. Congrats on 250 too Sowing (:

Thanks Daddy (I need to find a better nickname because that just felt wrong to type). I agree with you completely that having a Christian background helps with records like this. I can totally imagine a non-Christian not seeing the immediate appeal of this because so many of the metaphors are linked to biblical stories and references of that nature. Even still, it's appreciable on the same level - it just might take more work.

I'm a strong Atheist and I still find this totally gripping. Only the chorus of C-Minor pushes it slightly into the "too preachy" area for me, the rest is totally golden. If one man could make me convert to religion, it's mothafuckin Weiss

philosophical, measured, moving, intricate, weathered: a very special record
those who deny its merits due to differing belief patterns need to open up and r e c o g n i s e!

Reminds me a lot of Listener. I see those guys got a lot of influence here.

Relistened to this the other day.
In a Sweater Poorly Knit is amazing

Still surprised that's the most popular song here on YouTube. Always thought it'd be Nice and Blue pt. 2 or something

Just saw this review, and while mewithoutYou at this point isn't really a Christian band anymore (you could argue that they aren't here, either, since Christianity is a pretty exclusive religion - "No one comes to the Father except through me, etc." ), this is a truly beautiful album, even if I still think It's All Crazy! is better overall.
Good writeup Sowing. You did this album justice.
Also, yes, In a Sweater Poorly Knit is leaps and bounds above everything else here, and one of the best songs in the band's discography, up there with The King Beetle on a Coconut Estate.
