I still don't see Deftones as a nu metal band, it always seemed like they were doing their own thing and they just happened to get swept up with the scene. Around The Fur is their most nu metal probably but everything after that falls more into the alt metal genre for me.

Indisputably one of the best albums ever

Chad’s higher cleans in “Severed” are his rawest, most vulnerable moments he ever made. It is hard to top such a heavy and personal song as such. I would describe this album as “Iowa” but if the bassist was a Les Claypoolesque talented bass god vs a drum deity in Joey Jordison for Slipknot. It is an avant-garde “Iowa” full of vitriolic anger, seething rejection, introspective realization, rx to drugs, thoughts on drugs, and Ed Gein… So much better than Iowa in that there’s more variety, less monotony. Easier to digest, better more articulate lyricism, more cohesion, better overall ensemble, and more variance that works makes this a top 20 nu metal album in the genre at least.

Better than anything Slipknot put out but they could never follow this up. They also couldn’t if they wanted to be commercially viable/accessible. It was just certified platinum recently but how much of that is due to “Dig” being memed to death or the popularity of the latter two albums “The End of All Things to Come” and “Lost and Found” (they got lost…)? Their base audience wasn’t meant to be 5 elitist gatekeeping metalheads. It was meant to be 100 dumb kids going to Hot Topic wearing a “Slipknot/Korn/Nu Metal” band tee. They had to flanderize their music to appeal to a wider audience, in turn sacrificing quality, creativity, and consistency.
