Two different mediums. I like comedies myself. I'll say it right now, Pineapple Express is an all time favourite of mine.
This is is a band though who are trying to to be all groundbreaking and edgy and are using cheap tricks to do so.
I love pop music myself. Call Me Maybe is meant to be a fun song, and so I don't see it comparable here

That's where we differ in opinion I guess.
I sincerely don't think Imagine Dragons are trying to be "edgy" or "groundbreaking". They're a band that won
the mainstream rock lottery. I think they're just making music they enjoy and with the resources and talents
they have. They may not be talented musicians, they may resort to derivative techniques and production, but
I think that speaks more about their inexperience and being caught off guard with their success then trying
to plot a way to top the charts with generic singles.
In all, I believe it's more likely that they're an inexperienced band that hit pay dirt early more then a
band that's programmed to manipulate the masses.

I basically agree, JWT. I think I saw someone else mention it somewhere, but Fun is the case in point. Aim & Ignite was hailed as an underground classic of the indie pop scene, but when Some Nights - an almost equally good record - exploded onto the scene, everyone started backing off in their affection for the band (around this site, anyway). I think there's this inherent part of all of us that wants to be different, and that means if everyone thinks it's good, it can't actually be. Which of course is dumb logic.

"Thanks. I can understand someone thinking this is average, but when it stoops to below 2 and begins being
neighbors with Artists such as Brokencyde and the Jonas Brothers, I just shake my head. Fact is that if this
was just another band that didn't make it big, opinions on their music would be quite different."
I'll take corporate tween-oriented pop drivel over this shite anyday

And then of course it isn't that simple, because everyone has different tastes so someone might legitimately think Imagine Dragons suck and are the worst band ever, and who are we to correct them? All we can do is agree to disagree.

I remember that too sowing. I remember when Aim & Ignite came out and had a a near 4.5 rating here and was
heralded as a landmark recording. Some Nights soon followed, and with that the scrutiny that they were
pandering to the mainstream and simply nothing special.
Imagine Dragons may not be your cup of tea, but rating their music can be decided completely differently
based off of whether or not you think the band's identity is a story of young success with inexperience or
if you believe they are a corporately manifested cash cow.
I choose to pick the former.

Agreed sowing, I can't disagree with someone's ear for music. I think we can debate the contributing factors leading to one's opinion such as is a band a corporate sellout or just simply not as talented as their contemporaries.
From what I've seen I think a lot of emphasis and critiquing comes from people head over heels that these guys are sitting in a room systematically crafting song after song to maximize money from singles and merchandise instead of out of pleasure and exploration. And I think this key difference in mindset can change one's views on a record tremendously.

Like it or not, Imagine Dragons' insistence on shoving themselves down our throats doesn't seem to have any foreseeable end..
he writes as he opens his review of the band's *second* album
I don't think there's an official stream for this, so it might get deleted. Just warnin' ya...
he comments immediately before he asks to have the review deleted

Well the thing is, we don't know what goes on behind
closed doors. I'm sure these guys have a lot of
consultants helping them craft hits, which makes them
at least something of a cash cow. Of course,
they're probably nowhere near the level of a Rihanna
type where she probably has all of her work done for
her and all she does is show up. They're not young
guns just trying to make it, but they aren't
completely corporately manifested, to use your
words. Bottom line: I agree that they aren't as bad
as a 2 or whatever they're averaging on this site,
but look at the site demographic: hipsters,
elitists, and pre-teens.
Also: all of this is idle talk at this point if there
isn't a stream b/c this review will get annihilated.

Excuse pretty much every single person that wrote a review about this life changing album. Who the hell are any of you to talk total nonsense and hate about this amazing record? If any of you would just take a moment to listen to the album you would know exactly that- what your "theory" was before, was completely wrong. Smoke + Mirrors is a fantastic sophomore album of Night Visions and it deserves so much more credit than what you judgmental people are giving it. Okay, yeah this album maybe isn't for you, but why in the hell do you need to talk so damn low on it? Maybe, just maybe, Imagine Dragons are some people's world and they are the only ones who were there for them, including myself. Yes, Smoke + Mirrors doesn't sound like their EP's or Night Visions, but if Imagine Dragons wanted this album to sound exactly like their old music, wouldn't you think they would name the new record "Night Visions 2"? If you ask me, they have guts to experiment and to try something new. Smoke + Mirrors is more of the sympathetic or apologizing album that is basically asking for forgiveness for mistakes that were made and wanting to start over. Smoke + Mirrors is an amazing sophomore album that is underrated, and should be shown more appreciative credits to. Much love and respect to my Dragons, you did it again. xoxo
