I have heard Break it Yourself, not those other two, maybe I'd like those more.

Both are among very inventive, beautiful and authentic albums - in terms of both music and lyrics -, definitely among my favorite stuff coming out of singer-songwriter tradition in recent years. The Mysterious Production of Eggs is the defining Bird record, I'd say.

There's some great moments on Break it Yourself though, but it often kind of feels like a less subtle and fleshed-out take on his earlier stuff.

It took awhile, but I've come to realize this is better than just about everything in their catalog, including The Crane Wife.

This is their fourth best imo, definitely better than The Crane Wife, which imo is overrated relative to the rest of their catalog.

I woke up at 5AM the other morning with Leslie Ann Levine stuck in my head and couldn't fall back to sleep for hours. It was fairly creepy but it could have been a worse song I guess.

they're both fine albums, just way more straightforward and less conceptual than the earlier shit.

The King is Dead is legit their best imo and one of the top ten albums of the decade but you have to be into Americana to enjoy it. Imo the simplicity does wonders and brings the extra emotional resonance that was always slightly missing from their work before.

Except for their second album they're all amazing imo

yeah the second album is good but not amazing, not as good as Picaresque. my impression is that the newer stuff is rated higher because of stuff like pitchfork or something giving it attention and so the exposure lead to them having more votes and recognition than this
