JTs complaining about how benighted is a camel ripoff that doesn't get shit because its one of their most popular albums while everyone calls heritage derivative and dated, but benighted is only one song and the rest is classic opeth while all of heritage is dated 70s prog so his argument doesn't really work

Exactly, Jamie. The style is like 70s prog, but who said one can't write original enough compositions in an older style (that has been overlooked for so long)? I hear the Magma-like bassline in Devil's Orchard same as any, but no one critiques every one of their metal riffs the way the prog Opeth albums have been scrutinized. As a prog fan, it's quite obvious there's a bias.

Benighted is fine and SL is top 3 'Peth, JT is just being the valiant defender of heritage like always

Benighted is pretty boring tbh.

My argument works fine cos I'm saying only a few particular moments on Heritage are overly derivative.

I don't wanna give the wrong impression that just because it's a 70s style that automatically means that I don't like it as much. For example, I think Steve Wilson's Raven is a fantastic take on 70s prog. I'll admit I definitely favor more modern prog, but that doesn't mean 70s prog doesn't have its merits. I have WYWH 5'd after all. My overall point is that it could have been handled better here.

Also I'd take Heritage over Wilson's boring take on 70's prog any day.
