Um, watchmen is a graphic novel from 1986 and the film adaptation was awesome.
Also this review is bad

And how the hell is watchmen cliche? It's atypical - there were A LOT of human deaths and no peaceful resolution. The messages are pretty dismal and generally misanthropic

I think he meant the character arcs and back stories are quite cliche. Not all of them, but Dr Manhattan and Rorscach are and the "kill everyone to save everyone" is kinda been done before.
Other than that, I disagree. It's such a backwards thinking way of looking at superheroes, like the lack of mercy of the The Comedian, or the rapist scene, which was particularly nasty. I think that's how a lot of superheroes should be, cos it's not like they're all happy and smiley and "woo, peace"

Both are good but watchmen is better I'd say.
Also idk why people feel cliches are necessarily bad. That said, the kill millions to save billions premise hasn't been exhausted anywhere near as much as the good guys winning and order being restored to the galaxy. If he's referring to their backstories I'd also have to disagree; Rorschach's story in particular is excellently fleshed out and engaging. It doesn't need to be thought-provoking or groundbreaking, and I think there's a misconception about new equalling better.

watchmen was badass

maybe that's what i'll watch tonight actually

@milk carton. Watchmen all the way.
@Gyro There's some pretty strong backing behind it, unlike quite a lot of films, but my point is that it's something that's done before. We should bear in mind that it's still technically a superhero movie, just with almost everything we know about superheroes turned on its head in brilliant fashion. But there's also a huge psychological element to it too, which I think some people don't appreciate

It seems to me you're the expert, Mark!

I guess the backwards way of looking at it is kind of interesting. But aside from that a lot of the characters have a basic psychology. Rorschach isn't really unique aside from his decent backstory, let's be honest. The disturbed superhero thing is just ugh. Even the ending wasn't all too original.
At the end of the day I'd say it was original for a DC/Marvel movie but the idea itself wasn't very unique. It's been done.

i like how the idea of novelty is so conveniently used as a tool to bash something when like 99% of everything is ripped off of something.

man of steel soundtrack is one of his best

It seems to me like a lot of people concern themselves far too much with what's 'original' as if originality makes something inherently better. Older Disney films, for example, are rife with well-worn cliches but I don't like them any less. There are many things to consider when assessing something's value
