It's more the way he bends the notes and pretty much plays a guitar solo on keyboard. Sure, it sounds slightly different but it's basically two guitars dueling. But yeah, I agree with everythin you said Oni.
*sigh*
Maybe they could hire Flatlander on the keyboards too?

Rudess is bringing the textures during the verses, unfortunately he's very low in the mix to be appreciated properly. The wankery is so much now that its all a person remembers from Rudess. Listen to the keyboards during the intro and first verse of the Greate debate (hell a lot of keyboard work on that song and album is great).
He was definitely pushed to wank more by MP and JP, they actually wanted someone more technically adept and he was their answer.

Yeah, that's practically why they kicked out Sherinian and took him in the band; I think they just wanted to do more techincal stuff. I understand them a bit though, because Rudess did some tasty stuff with them in LTE

i heard somewhere that after LTE, they figured Rudess just fitted the band ethic more, which were MOAR SOLOS I presume.

When I was younger I thought Awake was pretty sweet too, but agreed overall Hans.
