"without any good vocals, melodies or atmospheres throughout aside from dead winter ways"
I don't think we listened to the same album, haha

Though I prefer their older work, atmospherically speaking I think this album comes only second to Weiland. Nature has been their main theme since their inception and I think this album excels at painting the mental image. The lyrics are very harmonious with the music in my opinion.

I can't help but feel slightly disappointed. I'd be lying if I didn't admit I was hoping for Weiland pt.2, and to an extent this may cloud my judgement. But to me the instrumentation in this doesn't work. It's too 'easy listening', too synth heavy. It's Empyrium though, so I will be giving it repeat listens and hoping it grows on me. It certainly isn't a BAD album.

i don't know, almost all of the metal sections of this just don't really work, especially in the gutter of this spring. it just turns into this muddy wall of noise with almost no melody to it. we are alone and the turn of the tides are just the epitome of forgettable when compared to some of their far superior classical compositions (fossegrim).
and i really hate the monotony of the vocals - on their previous work they shook it up a little with instrumental pieces or at least a different kind of delivery (where the hell are the screams?). here it's just the same monotone voice over and over and over without any variation in delivery.
for every thing they do right they do like 3 things wrong

I must admit even though I loved this album, after powering through an all day Empyrium marathon there is something that holds this one back from hitting the same bar the other releases had. It's hard to do a direct comparison since they weren't trying to replicate their old work though.
I'm kinda curious as to what someone thinks of this album that hasn't been into Empyrium's old work. It seems like most people we either expecting a metal album or a folk album and it isn't really either which I can totally understand where the disappointment comes from if that's what I was expecting.
