The drums on Gold Day are symptomatic of a slightly annoying overproduction on this album.

The overproduction makes this album, it's meant to be kinda syrupy

Disagree. It should be way more lo-fi, but obviously some company fag had to mainstream and it drive Linkous directly to suicide.

The instrumental is fine but the vocals are super annoying. Iā€™ve never listened to Tom Waits but if thatā€™s what he normally sounds like then count me out... The main problem with the track is that it really doesnā€™t fit the albumā€™s atmosphere at all. King of Nails and Piano Fire are also fairly abrasive but they work much much better. Iā€™m rarely tempted to skip songs on an album but Dog Door might have to become an exception... Itā€™s probably not enough to affect how I rate the album overall but itā€™s a pretty glaring misstep imo.

Sea of Teeth has settled as my fave here, that was the point on my first listen that I was sure I was listening to something really special. Such a beautiful melancholy.

Can you taste the ghosts

Who shed their creaking hosts?

But seas forever boil

Trees will turn to soil...

'Sea of Teeth' is my favourite...either that of 'King of Nails'. Polar opposites.

'Sea of Teeth' is one I hold up there alongside Shearwater's 'I Was a Cloud' and the best of Talk Talk

It has a real skeletal beauty so I can see why you put it in a class with those.

King of Nails I like but donā€™t quite love but it has grown on me a bit as have all the Sparklehorse ā€œrockersā€.

With the Sparklehorse rockers you have to embrace their equally lo fi and skeletal ways

Some of them do feel a bit too scrappy though

8 years of soul-destroying misery so far avoided.
