If you loved in a place that gets lots of snow you'd realize how their has a wintry vibe to it.

its all good judio. not trying to be a dick....i've just been seeing that agalloch/winter connection from people for years and i never identified with it and i finally snapped with this review lol. i'm mostly jealous of that sort of connection that people feel.

i mean, i lived in pennsylvania for 9 years, but i lived in the suburbs. i think maybe if i lived in the north in a place with lots of forests and shit then maybe. i don't really see how agalloch speaks to a suburban blizzard. that's more like "fuck i gotta shovel this shit off the driveway"

I live in a condo on the fourth floor so we don't have to shovel. all I have to do is either look out my window or go for a walk

and enjoy it

i understand that 'winter' is definitely the kind of vibe that they are going for, and i can hear that in the music. it definitely inspires wintery imagery in my head. i just don't see how seeing snow on the ground while listening to it really makes that much of a difference. i can listen to agalloch in lousiana at night time and its 90 degrees and its fucking amazing

It's amazing music regardless but I personally think it'll be enhanced when wintertime comes around again. Everyone's different though.

Opinions change, tho, ha ha. Ive had stuff I didn't find appealing at all at first evolve into one of my favorite albums before.

Everyone processes music and how they write differently tho. When I was reviewing on a somewhat regular basis, it usually took me closer to a week with something I hadn't heard before to let it sink in enough and be satisfied with my writing about it.

@Ecnalzen: Makes sense. Sometimes it's like that for me, but other times I can formulate all my opinions on it really quickly, like this album. Not saying this rating won't grow over time but a few days were really all I needed for this album to sink in, if that makes sense.

I sounds great anytime because it's great music, I agree there. However, in the winter the outside atmosphere and the music's atmosphere seem to kind of coalesce and enhance each other (for me anyway). Even when I'm doing something as mundane as walking towards the bus stop, the albums feel like a sort of soundtrack to the chill air, falling snow and general atmosphere (even though I'm not in a forest).

I live in the midwest, so I get plenty of snow, and I still haven't associated this band with winter.

not to mention their debut pale folklore has a song called 'Dead Winter Days' and they have a song called 'Falling Snow' on ashes. Jam their entire discog ecnal!

@Judio, glad you reviewed this even though i don't agree with the score. Will read today when I have more time!

yeah but still if you wouldn't got any of those images you would not associate it with winter. if the covers would all be different you wouldn't be manipulated by this image cause how do you exactly make a winter sound in music without using jingle bells or shit like that. i think the winter aspect in this review is not worth mentionable and has nothing to do with this not being as good as their previous outputs. the thing you explained with the comfort zone i liked a lot and is way more fitting.

I guess i can see how someone wouldn't get the Wintery vibes from this if they've only lived in heat for their entire life. I mean, I live in the heat, but I regularly visit places with lots of snow in the winter so I'm also used to the cold.

I just don't get the seasonal association with certain types of music in general, tho. It's not this band in specific.

One day, Atari! One day...
